The Kafue National Park is one of the largest national parks in Africa and certainly one of the best, known for its abundant wildlife and unspoiled nature, it occupies an area of 22,400 square kilometres.

The park also encompasses Lake Itezhi – tezhi, in the southern park covering an area of 370 sq. km.

The Kafue National Park has a diversity of scenery and is a most fascinating and interesting park to visit.

Much of the park is made up of woodland, which is interspersed with grassy areas, which are grazed by sable, hartebeest, buffalo, wildebeest and numerous zebra. This is particularly true of the Southern section of the park.

The Northern section of the Park is dominated by a vast flood plain known as the Busanga Plains.

This is one of Kafue’s richest habitat and blue wildebeest, roan antelope, zebra, hartebeest, tsessebe, buffalo, reedbuck, oribi, puku and impala graze the lush grasses.

The plain and the rich swamps to the north also supports herds of red lechwe, a water loving antelope, roaming the area in their thousands.

Another rare antelope found in the swamps is the sitatunga. This shy antelope prefers to live deep in the swamps and is specially adapted to walk on swamp vegetation.
