Galle Fort
Galle Fort is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites, It was first buit in 1598 by the Portuguese and afterwords destroyed by Dutch and rebuilt by them in 1663
Galle is a famous seaport and was used by the colonial powers who controlled the maritime regions of Sri Lanka until the year 1875, when Colombo, with its re-constructed breakwater and enlarged harbour became the country’s major port. Situated 116 km. from Colombo, Galle is reached by road or rail down the southwest coast. Taken from the Sinhala Kings in 1587 by the Portuguese who erected the first fortifications, Galle was laid siege to by the Dutch in 1640.
The Dutch fort faces the sea on three sides and its ramparts, over a mile long, are today a favourite promenade for Galle’s citizens. Before leaving you must purchase some of the famous Galle lace as a souvenir of this ancient seaport.
Galle fort is one of the very few Forts in Indian subcontinent which depict the European fort building culture and style
Galle fort now hosts a number of luxury restaurants for tourists as well as a museum.
