Island of Mahe Introduction
Mahe, the principal island of the Seychelles archipelago is the largest and the most populated.
The island is about 17 miles long, north to south, and 5 miles wide at its widest. Victoria, the capital city, with a population of at least 25,000, is the social and economic center of the islands. The colonial influence of the French and then the British is quite evident in the towns architecture which reflects the style one can also see in Hong Kong, India, and East Africa.
To circle the island by car takes a half a day, or all day with plenty of stops and an occasional refreshing dip in the ocean on the way. For the most spectacular and panoramic vistas and an idea of the real size of the island, take a drive from Victoria to Port Glaud via Sans Souci. On the way up from Victoria, all of the worlds smallest capital can be seen. Once over the ridge, the vegetation becomes more luxuriant, more like a rain forest. The islands largest tea plantation is here. Morne Seychellois, at 3,000 feet the islands tallest peak, is usually shrouded in mist. From the road, the whole south end of the island can be seen.
