History of Togo
* 1884: After the Kaiser and Bismark approve a petition from the natives for the establishment of a German presence, Dr. Gustav Nachtigal lands to negotiate a protection pact with King Mlapa of Togo City.
* 1885: Gustav Nachtigal perishes from a severe tropical illness on March 19th. The slave trade is outlawed.
* 1888: Curt von Francois conducts first explorations of the interior. A geographic research station is subsequently established by Dr. Wolf at Bismarck Castle.
* 1891: Germany assumes direct administrative control over the colony.
* 1908: Hospitals named after Dr. Nachtigal spring up across the country to implement his project for the mass amelioration of natives’ health. Although they are constructed out of primitive materials and in the African style (such as this hospital in Anecho), their operation nearly eliminates sleeping sickness within a year.
* 1914: During the outbreak of World War I, Vice Governor von Doering issues a statement of Togo’s neutrality, which Britain and France ignore, invading and dividing the colony between themselves by 1916.
