Tips for Expats living in Brunei

You can buy most things here in Brunei. Except alcohol !

If you are after your old favourites from home then choice can sometimes be limited or stock comes and goes. You soon learn to buy your favourite food items in bulk when you see them on the shelf (and those packets of Abbey Crunch have my name on it!). Well known international brands such as Marmite, Nescafe etc are easy to find.

Supasave stocks Waitrose items and lots of Austrailian imports. Some branches have non-Hallal sections for ham and bacon etc.  Most supermarkets have a good selection of baby goods such as Pampers nappies, Johnson products, Cow & Gate, Hippo etc.

There are also numerous department stores selling clothes to electrical goods. DVD’s, VCD’s and CD’s are also in abundance, especially in Gadong.

There are plenty of international fast food joints. So you can feast on a Big Mac, KYC or have a slice of your favourite “italian” dish from Pizza Hut.  There is even a passable Fish and Chip restaurant near the Berakas camp!

There are also several Coffee Shops, including Coffee Bean, though Starbucks has not hit town yet.

A trip across the border to Malaysian Sarawak is a popular Thursday, Friday and Saturday night event for many expats. You can pick up your duty free allowance, have a bite to eat and experience what can only be described as “The Wild Frontier” at Kuala Luara. The border closes at around 9.30pm so watch out!

So all in all. Plenty of choice.  And you certainly won’t go hungry!
