Brunei Climate

The climate is tropical, with uniform daily temperatures in the high twenties to mid thirties with cooler evenings and nights, high humidity and heavy annual rainfall with most of this falling in the monsoon season between November and March. Heavy rain tends to last for less than an hour at a time. Relative humidity averages around 82% and on very humid nights, some of the most amazing electrical storms can be seen.

Brunei lies below the typhoon belt and has no history of earthquake or volcanic activity. In 1997 and 1998, there was a considerable reduction in rainfall due to the El Niño weather phenomenon and this exacerbated the effects of seasonal burning-off in parts of South East Asia. As a result, there were several months when the air quality was seriously degraded by smoke-related haze. Apart from this, the country’s air is free from the kind of industrial and vehicle exhaust pollution present in the cities of some other South East Asian countries.
